Zelos back on track with Mini Challenge title defence
Monday 6th June 2022After a challenging start to the Mini Challenge season at Donington Park, Dan Zelos returned to form at Brands Hatch as he achieved a podium place.
Determined to get his season off to a positive start following engine issues in the curtain-raiser, Zelos returned to the track with a new engine under the bonnet of his Davanti-sponsored MINI. However, unforeseeably he ran into issues with his racing tyres instead, suffering two punctures in practice, which forced him to limit his laps in an attempt to protect the tyres.
Not only that, wet weather conditions on day two made the competition even more challenging, but Zelos fought hard for his title.
His results over the course of the weekend saw him jump from sixth to equal-forth in the championship table.
Commenting on the weekend, Zelos said:
“We were almost back where we should be, and to come away with a couple of podium finishes and a good haul of points was a very positive outcome. It feels like our season has finally started!
“That said, I’m not entirely happy as we still have a few issues to iron out. We had a great pace in practice, but could only get the race tyres to last for a handful of laps. We had two punctures in the afternoon, and given everybody receives just six new tyres per event, that immediately put us in a difficult position and compromised our strategy.
“Quite honestly, in the circumstances, I don’t think we could have got very much more out of the weekend than we did, but now we need to go away, reset and try to find a set-up that really works with the new tyre so we can come back stronger at Oulton Park.”
Rounds 7 and 8 will take place at Oulton Park on 10-12th June.
