Your summer tyre guide

Friday 28th June 2024

We’re all facing the traditionally unpredictable British summer weather, but with the temperatures slowly getting warmer and with many of us looking forward to taking to the road for staycations, it’s a good time to think about if summer tyres are for you.
If you are ready to make the most of summer road trips, let’s uncover more about summer tyres…

What are summer tyres?

Summer tyres are designed to deliver optimal performance when temperatures exceed 7 degrees Celsius. They use a firm rubber compound which provides more grip in hot temperatures compared to winter tyres. They also have a shallower tread pattern helping them maintain better shape, and in turn means they are far more stable at higher speeds, compared to winter tyres.

One of the main advantages of summer tyres is their optimised handling in both, wet and dry. This is partly due to the specially designed tyre tread bars, which offer better grip length and sideways, which is beneficial to minimising aquaplaning.

What are the design features of summer tyres?

Looking in more detail at the design features that maximise performance in summer, we can use the Davanti DX640 as an example. A dynamically designed passenger and SUV tyre for maximum grip and ultra-high performance, some of the design features that make it perfect for use in the warmer months include:

  • Asymmetrical tread design with a continuous outer band for advanced cornering grip and an inner tapered block design for wet weather traction.
  • Innovative block shapes vary with tread wear providing progressive performance throughout the tyre’s life.
  • Four longitudinal grooves provide optimal water dissipation, enabling superior levels of wet grip.

Or if high-performance driving is on your agenda this summer, why not opt for a tyre that will deliver unbeatable performance. Davanti’s Protoura Sport provides extreme control, grip, and comfort on the road. Some of its unique features include:Maximised contact patch: The solid continuous centre rib transfers cornering forces to the tyre structure and maximises contact with the road.

  • Hydro-dynamic dimples: The rhombus-shaped reliefs disrupt flow closest to the tyre surface, resulting in reduced drag and more efficient water evacuation.
  • Modified outer channels: To minimise road noise output, the Protoura Sport’s outer channels have been engineered with constricted notches.
  • Ribbed and serrated block edges: Under longitudinal force, ribbed and serrated block edges bite into the road and provide an efficiently focused braking force.
  • innovative trapezoid projections: The inner groove also features innovative trapezoid projections that create low pressure zones and aid the flow of water from the inner groove.

Davanti offers a wide range of summer tyres, designed for cars, SUVs, and vans which you can read more about here.

And when the cold weather hits?

However, we know what the UK can be like. If you’re frequently driving in regions with mild winter conditions and less extreme temperature changes you may want to avoid the hassle of seasonal tyre swaps, and all-season tyres can be an economical and more convenient choice.

All-season tyres are developed with a slightly harder compound compared to summer tyres, allowing the tyre to be more adaptable in varying weather conditions. The hardness of the compound provides a strong grip in dry conditions for extra durability in summer, whilst also being able to flex and perform in colder, more damp environments too.

Developed with varied climate countries in mind, all-season tyres can provide the safety of winter and summer tyres in one. Davanti now offers a range of all-season tyres for passenger cars and commercial vehicles with the Alltoura 4-Seasons, Alltoura H/T 4-Seasons and Vantoura 4-Seasons – perfect for any driver who is looking for peace of mind that they are prepared whatever the weather.

Our all-season range is also suitable for use in countries with winter tyre legislation. When looking for a tyre that will deliver performance in colder temperatures, simply look out for the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) and M+S symbols on the sidewalls of your tyres. These markings are now an industry standard and are the best indicator that your tyre is equipped and certified to drive in the snow.
