Preparing your performance weekend car this summer

Friday 26th May 2023

With summer just around the corner, there’s nothing more exhilarating than taking to the road in your convertible or ‘weekend’ sports car and enjoying the thrill of the ride while taking in the scenery. If you’re about to hit the road in your lesser-used ‘summer’ car though, it’s important to carry out a few vital checks.

Tyres

Firstly, look over each of your tyres for any signs of damage, cracking, bulges or deflation. Then, make sure they are inflated to the correct pressures. If you do identify any damage, contact your local garage as soon as possible to carry out a professional check – don’t attempt to drive on them if it does not seem safe to do so.

If your tyres are more than 10 years old, it’s time for a change. To help you get the best out of your performance vehicle, it’s important to select the right tyres. Designed for ultra-high performance vehicles, Protoura Sport delivers extraordinary levels of performance, balancing the elements of style and strength to achieve a tyre which is professional in its technical capabilities. It is at one with the driver, which means you can be confident behind the wheel and focus on enjoying the ride.

Its key features include:

  • A solid outer block pattern for precise steering response
  • Wide longitudinal grooves for efficient water evacuation
  • A deep rim protector for enhanced wheel protection
  • A solid circumferential centre groove for straight-line traction

Fluids

There are several fluid checks you can carry out to ensure everything is topped up and working as it should.

Your oil levels should be above the minimum mark but no higher than the maximum – it’s best to check this when the engine is cool. If your oil hasn’t been changed recently – even if the car hasn’t done much mileage since the last change – it’s worth considering an oil and filter change.

Next, check your coolant. Again, this is best to do when the engine is cool. Be sure to use the manufacturer-specified solution, rather than just tap water, as this will help to protect your engine in the winter months and prevent rust.

Any unused fuel in the tank can turn stale, which can make the car run rough or even have trouble starting. Refuel and take the car on a long drive to help flush out the old fuel.

If you haven’t had your brake fluid changed in a while, it’s important to get it checked, as this has a recommended service life.

Finally, top up your screen wash. Extended periods of dry, warm weather can throw up lots of dust, dirt and debris, so don’t be caught out with a dirty screen and no fluid to clear it, as this can impair your driving view.

Lights and wipers

A couple of things that are easy to overlook, don’t forget to check that your lights are all in working order, and that there is no damage to your wiper blades.

Now you’re ready to hit the road. Be sure to carry out these checks throughout the summer months too to get the most out of your vehicle.
