Drivers may be risking a £10,000 fine by not checking their tread depth
Tuesday 18th February 2025A recent study by the RAC and charity TyreSafe* revealed that only 39% of drivers are aware of the legal minimum tyre tread depth of 1.6mm. This means that 61%* of drivers may be unaware of the risks associated with driving on tyres that lack proper maintenance, potentially making their vehicles unsafe.
Many UK drivers are putting themselves at risk of avoidable accidents and fines by not checking their tyres regularly. 50%* of drivers admitted that it never crossed their mind, with 40%* relying on their garage’s mechanic to do it for them. Surprisingly, 5% claimed that they would wait until their car failed its annual MOT before replacing their tyres.
It’s important to note that routinely checking your tyres is a crucial, yet quick and simple task that is part of owning a vehicle, requiring little knowledge and time to do so. However, many UK drivers are encountering avoidable accidents or fines by not checking their tyres regularly.
The risks of not checking your tyres
Ignoring your tyre tread depths and skipping monthly checks can result in reduced traction and grip, increased stopping distance, and a higher chance of aquaplaning – all of which become more pronounced as tread depths fall under the legal limit. Additionally, there is a greater risk of punctures and blowouts, which are particularly dangerous at high speeds.
Beyond safety concerns, drivers found with all four tyres below 1.6mm may face fines of up to £2,500 per tyre, with a maximum penalty of £10,000, and 12 points on their licence. While 70%* of drivers claimed they were aware of these fines and knew the legal tread limit, many did not realise the penalty could extend to points on their license with the possibility of losing their licence completely.
How can I check my tread depth?
Checking tyre tread depths is a quick and easy task, the simplest and most accessible being the 20p check. Simply insert a 20p coin upright into the main grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is obscured by the tyre, the tread is within the legal limit. However, if the coin’s outer band is visible, the tyres are likely below the legal tread depth and need replacing as soon as possible.
For a more precise measurement, use a tread depth gauge, which will provide you with a more accurate reading, and can be kept in your car for ease.
In conclusion, performing these quick and simple checks each month will enhance both your safety and the safety of other road users. Additionally, regular checks can save you money by preventing hefty fines.
